Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Weekend Gun Injuries

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has investigated an incident where two individuals were wounded by a handgun early Saturday morning just after 10:30 AM. The incident was reported to the Jefferson County Health Center. According to the investigation, two individuals were examining a 9mm handgun for possible private sale. When one individual went to clear the round from the weapon, it negligently discharged, causing non-life-threatening injuries to both men. One was shot in the hand and the other in the leg. The weapon and shell casing were recovered by law enforcement. Neither individual wished to press criminal charges as the incident was simply an unfortunate accident. As such, no charges are pending or anticipated.  

Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding released the following statement, “The incident should serve as a good reminder of the need to always practice firearms safety, to treat every weapon as if it is loaded, and to ensure firearms are kept in a secure and locked location when not in use.”
