The Fairfield Community School District has implemented a new pickup/drop off system for students at Washington Elementary this year which has created a bottleneck of traffic in the immediate area surrounding the school.Washington School Principal Anne Clark and School Superintendent Dr. Laurie Noll have been working with city engineer Melanie Carlson to improve traffic flow on Madison Avenue during student drop-off and pick-up. To date parents have been asked to line up in their cars in the westbound lane of Madison Avenue and turn south of E Street to drop off and pick up their children.
Many parents are instead parking on both sides of Madison Avenue between D Street and Hillside Drive, which leaves little room for vehicles to get through. The Fairfield Public Safety and Transportation Committee discussed possible solutions and decided to restrict parking on Madison Ave with these suggestions: No Parking School Days from 8:00-9:30 AM and 2:30-4:00 PM on both sides of Madison Ave from D Street to E Street and then also for the same times on both sides of Madison Ave from E Street to Hillside Drive. These changes are expected to be brought before the full council in the near future.
