A manure spill in Jefferson County could have been much worse if it were not for the quick actions of the applicator. The spill occurred last Monday around 6:30pm when manure was being pumped by Maynard Manure Management applicators from E&H Livestock, located about 7 miles Northeast of Fairfield. Applicator John Widmer noticed the runoff and plugged the tile inlet, which is connected to a line that runs into North Walnut Creek.
An estimated 800 to 1,000 gallons of manure could have been spilled with little, if any, reaching the creek. Water samples that were collected from the Creek showed no elevated ammonia levels or dead fish downstream. The DNR says they will monitor cleanup and consider appropriate enforcement action.
