Ottumwa Family Escapes Blaze, Home Considered A Total Loss

An Ottumwa family was able to escape a blaze at their home without injury Monday afternoon. Ottumwa Fire crews arrived at the burning home on West 6th Street at approximately 3pm to find the young couple, with their children and pets already safe outside the home. It took around an hour for crews to contain the fire, which devastated the home. It appears to be considered a total loss. The fire is believed to have started in the basement of the home, although the investigation is currently active. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide support for the family.
