The murder trial of Jacob Heckethorn, the Ottumwa man accused in the August 2018 murder of 43 year-old William Shettlesworth of Bloomfield has bugun this week. He is charged with 1st degree murder and also attempted murder in that incident as court documents indicate that he fired multiple shots at another person who was also present at the time. He is also facing attempted murder charges in another August 2018 shooting, the victim in this case is 61 year-old William Collett Sr of Ottumwa. That trial is still set to begin on February 11th of 2020. Following his apprehension investigators searched a residence where Heckethorn had been residing, and recovered evidence that linked him to both shootings. He remains in the Wapello County jail on a $1 million cash-only bond. Heckethorn intends to argue self defense in both trials.
