A 17-year-old from Marion was pulled from Lake Darling Friday afternoon after the kayak he was paddling sank from a crack in its hull.State Park Ranger Zach Hayworth was contacted by Washington County Communications Center at around 2:45pm regarding an individual who had become separated from his kayak and was calling for help. Upon arrival, Hayworth found the juvenile to be an estimated 30-40 yards offshore in 43-degree water and not wearing a life jacket.
On his first try Hayworth felt the effects of the water quickly went back to shore to regroup. On his second attempt, He threw a life jacket close enough for the teen to grab and he was pulled to shore safely. Witnesses estimated the juvenile had been in the water for about 15 to 20 minutes. Brighton Fire Department and Brighton First Responders arrived and began treating him for hypothermia before transporting him to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City, where he was treated and released.
