From Little Free Pantries:
At the end of 2020 there were seven Little Free Pantries in Fairfield, but before 2021 is halfway over, there will be ten pantries in Fairfield and one in Lockridge. On April 6, 2021, the Lockridge City Council unanimously approved the installation of a little free pantry near the Lockridge Post Office. With the help of Girl Scout Troop #2564 and Boy Scout Troop #64, the goal is to have the pantry installed by the time school is out for summer break. Pantries were also added at 104 North Court Street (Thymely Solutions) and 401 East Buchanan, Fairfield, to further support the community. Fairfield’s tenth pantry is slated for the southwest part of Fairfield, with a location to be determined.
With the addition of Lockridge, Fairfield Little Free Pantries has decided to change its name to Jefferson County Little Free Pantries (JCLFP). JCLFP is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers who are passionate about helping others. The Little Free Panty is a grassroots, crowdsourced solution to neighborhood food insecurity. The pantries are meant to supplement the remarkable efforts of other organizations such as The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County and Carry On Bags. Little free panties provide an anonymous and immediate way for neighbors to pick up what they need to get through the moment.
The motto of the Little Free Pantry movement is “Take what you need, give what you can”.
JCLFP intends to expand into other Jefferson County communities. Organizations within the County can contact Deb Pogel ([email protected]) to learn about establishing a pantry in your community. JCLFP can assist with funds to build the pantry, construction guides, and promotion of any new pantry. Those wishing to provide a cash donation can contact Divine Star Charity, 200 W Washington, Fairfield, Iowa 52556.
