Jefferson County Sheriffs Department And An Iowa Agency Team Up To Keep Nicotine Products Out Of The Hands Of Minors

On January 6th, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department began to partner with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division For Tobacco, Alternative Nicotine and Vapor Product Education and Enforcement to keep those products out of the hands of Jefferson County youth. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has agreed to participate in the I – PLEDGE program. The program is a partnership between the Alcoholic Beverages Division to educate local retailers and to enforce Iowa’s tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor product laws. Since the inception of the I PLEDGE program in 2000, the statewide tobacco compliance rate has grown to 91%. The program places an emphasis on retail training. Clerks who successfully complete the free online course and pass their exam will I PLEDGE certified, and will allow the retail establishment to use affirmative defense against a civil penalty if the certified clerk makes an illegal sale. Criminal penalties for selling nicotine products to a minor include a $100 fine for first offenders, $250 for a second offence and $500 for a 3rd of subsequent offence. You can take your I Pledge certification Course online at https//abd.iowa.gov.
