January is Radon Action Month, the month where everyone is urged to test their home for radon which is easy and inexpensive to do. Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas which can infiltrate any type of building and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. 21 thousand deaths a year in the US are attributed to radon. Iowa has the highest percentage of homes above the EPA recommended action level. In 2019 around 50% of homes in Jefferson County were being infiltrated by the gas, with high levels coming back in 37% of them.
The Jefferson County Environmental Health Dept., for the first time in 14 years due to COVID, is not giving out free radon test kits this month to help promote awareness, kits can still be purchased locally or by going to lchh.org.
