The Jefferson County board of Supervisors would like to remind the public that it is a crime to litter. If you litter and get caught you will face up to $625 in fines and up to 30 days in the county jail. In addition to water and soil pollution, litter can also pollute the air. Researchers estimate that more than 40 percent of the world’s litter is burned in the open air, which can release toxic emissions. Which will cause respiratory issues, other health issues, and even acid rain which will damage crops, erode buildings and threaten public health.
