The Iowa Red Cross is looking for honorable and selfless citizens who have demonstrated heroism in their community. A hero could be a first responder, a neighbor, a teacher, a friend or even a stranger who did something above and beyond in service to others. The heros will be recognized at the annual “Heroes of the Heartland” breakfast. Past hero recipients have been: a pastor that collects food and delivers the food to the homeless, a state trooper that saved a trucker’s life at a Highway Weigh Station, a neighbor waking up a family when he saw their house on fire and a military officer that runs a suicide prevention service for current servicemen and women. The 20th annual breakfast will be Thursday, March 26th, 2020, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. The breakfast event is also the major fundraiser for the Iowa Red Cross. The heroic act must be ongoing or have occurred in the 12 months preceding the Heroes event for which it is nominated. The deadline to nominate an individual is Monday, December 30th.
