Heckethorn Avoids 1st Degree Murder Conviction, Still Faces Up To 50 Years

Jacob Heckethorn, the Ottumwa man accused in the August 2018 murder of William Shettlesworth of Bloomfield and facing first degree murder charges has been found guilty of a lesser crime by a Wapello County jury. Jurors deliberated for nearly two full days before finding Heckethorn guilty of second degree murder and assault with intent to committ serious injury. Heckethorn faces up to 50 years in prison and a formal sentencing has been set for January 21st of 2020. He argued self defense as he also intends to do in the attempted murder charges that stem from another August 2018 shooting, the victim in this case is 61 year-old William Collett Sr of Ottumwa. That trial is still set to begin on February 11th of 2020.
