Former Van Buren County Attorney Once Again Facing Legal Troubles Of His Own

Former Van Buren County Attorney Abraham Watkins has pleaded guilty to reduced criminal charges stemming from an altercation in Des Moines last summer. According to Court records the 44 year old Watkins was accused of smashing the rear window of an individual’s car after the two had just concluded an argument that took place in an area where Watkins was skateboarding. He was charged with criminal mischief in the fourth degree, a serious misdemeanor. As part of the plea agreement, Watkins is ordered to plead guilty to disorderly conduct and pay a fine of $855, plus damages still to be determined.

Watkins was elected Van Buren’s County attorney in 2014. During his time in office the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors investigated allegations of sexual harassment against Watkins, which ultimately led to them filing a court petition successfully his removal from office. Watkins appealed and was later reinstated before losing in a 2018 bid for re-election. Just last year, the Iowa Supreme Court suspended Watkins’ license for a minimum of six months.
