A former Ottumwa High School Science teacher who was forced to resign by administrators has had his license suspended for a minimum of 5 years. Richard Wortmann, who began teaching in the District back in 2000 is accused of making inappropriate comments and inappropriately touching female students with the first incident taking place in 2016. Following that incident, Wortmann was assigned a mentor in an effort to manage his behavior. Although none of the incidents were overtly sexual, when grouped together investigators feel it shows a pattern of behavior that made female students of the School uncomfortable. In May of last year he was given the option to resign in Lieu of termination. He was ordered to receive both mental health and psychosexual evaluations before he can seek reinstatement.
