Flannagan and Hannes Punch Ticket To State

On Monday the Fairfield and Maharishi boys tennis teams hosted their Class 1A boys tennis district tournament. The Trojans’ Garrett Flanagan and Jace Hannes were the third seed of the doubles tournament coming into the day. It looked to be a long day for the two juniors as they had to go to a tie breaker set against Dominic Dupoux and Jay Wegman of Maharishi after dropping the first set 6-3. Flanagan and Hannes were able to bounce back with a 6-4 set win to push it to a tie breaker set, first to ten points, win by two, where they won 10-7.

They would then take on Luke Thomas and Brendon Worster from Keokuk and handle them easily with back to back set wins 6-0 and 6-2. This setup a battle with Trenton Link and Ryan Shmit of Xavier in the semifinals with a trip to the IHSAA state tournament on the line.

Flanagan and Hannes took the first set 7-5, needing just one more win to punch their ticket. Link and Schmit battled back to take the second set 6-2 so it was onto a final tiebreaker set. That tiebreaker needed extra serves before the two juniors from Fairfield got the win 12-10.

Flanagan and Hannes went on to take second place in the tournament, losing to Declan Coe and Hugh Courter from Xavier in the finals 6-3, 6-0 but their tickets to the State Tournament were already punched. The State Tennis Meet is set for May 24th and 25th
