The Sustainable Iowa Land Trust announced Fairfield as a pilot town as the SILT launches their Circle Our Cities campaign. Fairfield was chosen for its vibrant local, healthy food system, supportive local SILT leadership and manageable test-plot size.
The campaign’s mission is to ground local food systems in permanent local farms. It’s goal is to surround 10 Iowa cities with 10 permanent table food farms in 10 years.
SILT’s goal is to preserve 3 local food farms near Fairfield within a year with the help of local residents, SILT leadership and co-workers. The group will also be carefully documenting the successes and challenges of this pilot program for future efforts in other cities.
The recently hired, first Farm and Food Coordinator Christi Nickey will network with local food, hunger and farm advocates, elected leaders, and government staff to connect with landowners inspired by SILT’s mission. SILT is still building its Advisory Committee of champions and networkers to support and expand the program.
