The DNR is offering a second round of applications for a grant opportunity to help address food waste. The competitive grant opportunity helps efforts to expand storage and cold storage of donated food. Food banks, food pantries and other non-profit organizations receiving donated food for distribution to food insecure Iowans are eligible to apply. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until available funds have been awarded.
In the previous grant cycle that ended this past July, the Keosauqua Community food bank was awarded $7,000 for a new fridge, freezer and shelving. The cold storage units aimed to improve energy efficiency while extending shelf life of perishable food items and reducing spoilage. The bank Serves more than 200 individuals monthly and have added a twice per month weekend food distribution program for qualifying school children.
