Charles Douglas Wingate (aka Doug/Douglas!) passed peacefully June 1, 2024, in his home in Vedic City, Iowa.    Friends may leave online condolences at

Doug was the beloved son of Phil and Sue Wingate of Wilmington Delaware. Typical of Doug’s delightful sense of humor was that it amused him to no end that Katharine Smith Wingate – his mom, was called Sue! He would bring it up and laugh with friends and family.

Much can be said about his education and professional accomplishments, but those facts can be looked up.

It’s the anecdotes and funny stories that his family, sisters Patricia and Barbara, and an unbelievable number of world-wide friends,  have that will keep him alive in memory..
His Transcendental Meditation Community was of great importance to Doug and includes too many individuals to name but certainly Stephanie Wingate and George Beuchert are soul mates.

Doug adored travel, theatre, especially Broadway shows, and Michelin starred restaurants and he indulged those interests in many times and places.  He was, as one friend said, who knew that he adored Chorus Line, himself ‘One Singular Sensation!’  He had a joie de vivre and zest for life that was unrivaled. Sharing a show with him might include a standing ovation with a loud shout of “Bravo Bravo” and clapping of hands, if he loved it! Sharing a meal meant savoring every bite.

Although Doug had no children of his own, he delighted in spoiling his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews including Barbara’s daughter Elizabeth, Patricia’s sons Matthew, Andrew, Stephen and Daniel, as well as their children, Alexander, Christopher, Isabela, Natalia, Duncan and Evan. They in turn loved their Uncle Doug. Daughters- in -law Karyna, LaVerne, and Ibby were always included in the love from Uncle Doug.

A book could be written about this unique spirit of light’s travels through the world for the last 71 years.  May he live on in our souls and guide us to love, hope and compassion.  Bravo! Bravo! Bravo for a life well lived Douglas Wingate!
