The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors met in regular session on Monday morning where they awarded a bundled bridge project, which includes a bridge replacement on 257th Street in Jefferson County to Herberger Construction of Indianola at a bid price of $409K. This is a joint project with Wapello County as part of the Competitive Highway Bridge Program. The Bid From Herberger Comes in around $14K under the estimated project cost of $423K.
Also at the meeting the Board read a letter from Jefferson County Environmental Health Administrator Dan Miller where he notified the Board that he no longer wished to serve as County Weed Commissioner, instead recommending the duties be assumed by the County Road Department. Miller said that 5 County Road employees have their commercial pesticide state certification and it could be one commissioner with 4 deputies, providing 5 sets of eyes as opposed to one. Miller added that 8 surrounding Counties including Henry use a similar setup.
County Engineer Scott Cline said that he feels that the responsibility should not fall with the Road Department. A separate entity expressed their desire to fill the position, but at a cost of around $3,500 per year, providing another option, although the County isn’t looking to increase costs with the move. No decision was made at Monday’s meeting and further discussion will be held regarding the matter.
