The Class 4A 3rd ranked Fairfield varsity softball team started the season with 6-4 and 17-7 wins at Sigourney Monday night. The offence produced 28 hits. Emersyn Manley was 6 of 8 including a double and drove in 2 runs. Hannah Simpson finished 5 of 9 including a double and 2 runs batted in. Delaney Breen went 3 of 7 and drove in 3 runs. Brynley Allison ended up 4 of 10, ripped a double, scored 4 times and had 2 runs batted in. Coty Engle was 4 of 10, crossed the plate 3 times, drove in 3 runs and pitched the first contest. She fanned 3 batters, allowed 4 hits and 3 earned runs over the 7 innings. Bailey Hird worked the nightcap but those stats were not available.
Cardinal rolled 15-0 in varsity baseball against Winfield-Mount Union Monday. Dawson Lewis went 2 of 3 with a triple and 2 runs batted in. Drake Durflinger ended up 2 of 3, nailed a double and drove in 3 runs. Blaine Bryant was 2 of 3 including a double. Kaleb Figueroa finished 1 of 2 with a double. They both provided 2 runs batted in. Josh Courtney and Matt Streeby both were 1 of 2. Starter Courtney got the win, pitching 3 innings, had 6 strikeouts and didn’t allow a hit. Chance Randolph worked the 4th inning and gave up one hit.
The Van Buren County varsity softball team started the season blanking Columbus Junction 8-0 Monday. Ally Campbell led the 12 hit offense going 3 of 4 including a double. Annabell Cormier was 3 of 4 and drove in 2 runs. Tessa Sayre finished 1 of 2 and scored twice. Chelsey Huff contributed a double and pitched the 7 inning 2 hitter, totaling 12 strikeouts.
Cardinal fell 3-0 in a season opening varsity softball game at Winfield-Mount Union Monday. Brinlee Ostrander provided their only hit. Starter Ava Ferrell pitched 3 innings, fanned a batter, allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs. Nicoa McClure went the last 3 innings, had 2 strikeouts, gave up 2 hits and one earned run.
Pekin was scheduled to host Danville in baseball and softball Monday but those games were rained out.
