Accused Killer To Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation

Preston Martin, the Ottumwa man facing first degree murder charge, will be examined by medical professionals to determine if he is competent to stand trial. His attorneys believe that he lacks the ability to aid in his own defense as they claim he’s unable to hold a coherent conversation. Martin will undergo the evaluation at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. Upon completion of the evaluation, doctors will have 10 days to report back to the court. Martin is accused of killing 41 year old Thomas Carlton Foster of Ottumwa at Fosters home in May. Martin has pled not guilty to the murder charge, however prosecutors have added robbery and burglary counts as well. He is currently being held in the Wapello County jail on a $1M cash only bond and if he goes to trial faces a mandatory life sentence if convicted of the 1st degree murder charge. The trial date is set for January 14th
