Number 3 seed Oskaloosa took a 48-43 win over 7th seeded Winterset in the semifinal round of the Class 3A boys state basketball tournament Thursday at Des Moines. Cole Henry (middle of the picture below) racked up 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Xavier Foster finished with 14 points, 14 boards and 3 blocks. Austin Hafner scored 11. Rian Yates had 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 points. They outrebounded the shorter Huskies 39-23 but committed 18 turnovers, compared to just 6 by Winterset.
Now 18 and 5, they face top seeded 22 and 4 Norwalk in the championship game just after 6:30 tonight. Norwalk topped 4th seeded previously unbeaten Clear Lake 61-54 Thursday. The Indians rolled over Norwalk 68-47 at home on February 9th despite Henry not playing. Yates scored 26, going 6 of 10 on 3 pointers, provided 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Foster had 14 points, 10 boards and 6 blocks. Reserve Isaac Schultz scored 10. Osky lost 58-46 when they played at Norwalk on December 18th. Foster was their only player scoring in double figures with 18 plus 10 rebounds and 9 blocks. Hafner had 9 points, going 3 of 5 on 3’s. Yates totaled 8 assists, 6 boards but just 2 points. Henry finished with 5 assists and 4 points.
Norwalk is led by 5-11 junior Bowen Born. He has a scoring average of nearly 28 per game and has totaled 72 points at state this week including 40 in the 1st round win over Ballard. Born has made 26 of 55 field goals, going 3 of 15 on 3 pointers and 17 of 19 at the free throw line against Ballard and Clear Lake. He had 29 and 20 against Oskaloosa this season. Norwalk lost to Glenwood 67-58 in the first round of the state tournament last year. Glenwood would beat Osky 66-62 in the championship game.
