Fairfield fell to Oskaloosa 58-37 in Class 3A boys substate final basketball Monday night at Mount Pleasant. Carson Crile scored 15 including 9 on 3 point field goals and grabbed 8 rebounds. Tristin Waugh provided 7 boards and 4 points. Cole Engle netted 7 points. Austin Simpson finished with 6 rebounds and 4 points. Collin Breen scored 4 and Brittan Bowman hit a 3 point shot from half court as the buzzer went off at the end of the game. The support of students and community members was outstanding, filling half of the gym that holds just over 2000. The players and coaching staff appreciated everyone that was there.
Fairfield led 2-0 but the Indians got the next 6 points and would lead the rest of the way. It was 10-6 after the first quarter, 33-13 late in the 2nd and 33-15 at halftime. The Trojans scored 5 at the start of the 3rd period making it 33-20 but Osky answered and had a 43-26 advantage when it ended. Fairfield had an outstanding 18 and 4 season, highlighted by taking the Southeast Conference championship for the first time since 2004, not losing any of the 8 league games. The seniors were manager Bryanna Popejoy, Mark Diers, Bowman, Breen, Crile, Engle, Simpson and Waugh.
