4th of July Celebrations Relatively Calm

Other than several reports to local law enforcement regarding noise disturbances, 4th of July celebrations around Fairfield were relatively calm. There were no reports of firework induced fires from the Fairfield Fire Department and Van Buren County Hospital and the Jefferson County Health Center reported no instances of firework injuries.

A four month old baby and her mother were injured at an illegal fireworks show in Swisher on Saturday. A man reportedly lost his hand in a fireworks accident Monday in Sioux City.
 
According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause on average 18,500 fires every year in the US. A 2015 report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission states that about 11,900 people were treated for firework related injuries across the country, with 65 percent of those injuries being burns. According to the report, children under the age of 15 accounted for 26 percent of the estimated injuries.
