DNR To Up Water Patrols This Holiday Weekend

The Fourth of July weekend is upon us, and many will take to the road for an extended weekend, many will hit local lakes to soak up some sun and do a little boating.
The Iowa DNR law enforcement officers will be focusing on keeping boaters safe by cracking down on boating under the influence. The DNR will be conducting heightened awareness and enforcement of boating under the influence laws as part of the national Operation Dry Water campaign in hopes to decrease the number of crashes and deaths.
Keep in mind, operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal on all bodies of water. In Iowa, it is illegal to operate a vessel with a blood alcohol content level of .08 or higher – the same as a motor vehicle. If you are found to be impaired and operating a boat you will be arrested.
To avoid a tragedy, never operate a boat while under the influence and always wear a life jacket.
Iowans who plan on doing any traveling should expect to see more road patrols as well. To keep the roads safe, law enforcement will be on the lookout for drunk drivers this holiday weekend. Extra State troopers will be out on the roads, along with increases in patrols of local law enforcement. Keep it safe. Don’t drink and drive and always wear a seatbelt.
